It starts with balance. My job as your coach is to help free your voice so you can achieve a sound that is crisp and clear, with no random weak spots from the bottom to the top of your range with ease. No voice is the same, and the process can be very different for each singer. I help you find “YOUR” voice.
A good coach should be able to tell you your strengths, weaknesses, and show and explain the exercises needed to improve your singing. These exercises must be done correctly and frequently to achieve the desired result.
There is no instant pill to better singing. Knowledge and practise will make the journey enjoyable and rewarding.
I hope this is an appropriate question. I need some sort of clarification. I have recently stumbled onto the programs , The Voice and American Idol. Am I at all justified by saying that the talent is not there, with the exception of a few?
Hi and thanks for your comment. I’m not clear at all by what you mean, so I will have to counter your statement of saying “the talent is not there”, with saying that “talent” can be a very subjective word.
By definition talent means a person with superior ability or quality.
It is well known that extremely talented people spend 1000’s of hour rehearsing and practising to reach a superior ability. Depending on a singer’s natural music aptitude, I believe the amount of hours needed for a commercial singer to reach a superior ability can vary. People who learn and “live” music as children are automatically developing their musical talents and abilities from an early age. I believe that genetics can play a huge role as well in a person’s overall music aptitude.
That being said, there are so many other factors that come into play when we are talking about talent on TV shows such as American Idol and The Voice. Do these singers have talent? Well, sure they do! Is it amazing? No, I don’t really think so. It’s contemporary commercial singing for goodness sake! We simply love the tone, personality and performances of these singers!
Does it take a lot of hard work? Well, IMHO, it does for some, and it doesn’t for others. Does that mean that if it is easy for a singer to make a commercial sound that the music business likes to hear, (because it will sell CD’s and make them money), then that person is talented? Well, again, that is a very subjective question!
Let’s put it this way. Was Frank Sinatra really talented? What about Barbra Streisand, Neil Young, Freddie Mercury, Doris Day, Conway Twitty?
Hopefully, you see where I’m going with this. All these singers have a unique tone, unique personality, and sing unique commercial music. These are voices that are self-taught…..no classical training coordinations. And guess what? We love it all!! Does that mean they are talented?
If you enjoy listening to any of these singers, then you would indeed say they are talented. On the other hand, if you disliked a particular singer’s voice or music genre, then you might be inclined to think they were not so talented.
I hope this all makes sense. Talent is in the eye of the beholder.
Do the singers on American Idol and The Voice have talent? IMHO, YES!
